September 2012: Peace

During July’s theme of Joy, we looked in Isaiah 55 at how Joy and Peace are linked (“You shall go out with joy and be led forth in peace”). This provoked a question of what peace is. In the bible peace describes a state of completeness or wholeness, particularly in relationships, both personal, social and political; and also human and divine. It also describes a movement towards this state which involves restoration through justice of what was lacking in wholeness. There are eight particular passages which cover these aspects of peace:

In Ephesians 2 we start the new academic year with a reminder of the solid basis of all that we do this academic year: Christ is our peace: “He came and preached peace to you who were far away and peace to those who were near.”, and in Micah 5 (Thu 6 Sept) we look at the way in which the peace of Jesus was foretold: “He will shepherd his flock and be their peace” In Luke 7:36-50 we read how a particular woman found salvation and peace: Jesus said “Your faith has saved you: Go in peace”, and in Isaiah 52 (Thu 13 Sept) we look at how this was foretold “How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those who bring good news, who proclaim peace, who bring good tidings, who proclaim salvation”.

In Colossians 3 we are challenged by the call to let peace rule in our hearts: “Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful.” In John 14 we celebrate the gift of peace that Jesus leaves his followers which is accompanied by the command to “not be afraid”. In 1 Samuel 20 (Thu 27 Sept) we have a example of relational aspect of peace between two people (David and Jonathan):”Go in peace, for we have sworn friendship with each other in the name of the LORD. In Psalm 85 (Sun 30 Sept) we are reminded how righteousness and peace are linked, as we celebrate harvest: “Love and faithfulness meet together; righteousness and peace kiss each other”.

Here is some wisdom from Proverbs 3:17 Wisdom’s ways are pleasant ways, and all her paths are peace. 12:20 There is deceit in the hearts of those who plot evil, but joy for those who promote peace. 14:30 A heart at peace gives life to the body, but envy rots the bones. 16:7 When a man’s ways are pleasing to the LORD, he makes even his enemies live at peace with him. 17:1 Better a dry crust with peace and quiet than a house full of feasting, with strife. 29:9 If a wise man goes to court with a fool, the fool rages and scoffs, and there is no peace. 29:17 Discipline your son, and he will give you peace; he will bring delight to your soul.

May The LORD bless you and keep you; the LORD make his face shine upon you and be gracious to you; the LORD turn his face towards you and give you peace.
